Folly Beach

Folly Beach is a small coastal city located on Folly Island. Both the Island and the community are located in Charleston County, South Carolina. The community has a single neighborhood and is approximately 123rd largest community in the state. Folly Beach is part of the Charleston-North Charleston urbanized area. It has a mayor/council form of city government featuring a mayor and six council members. It is a nautical community and full of southern charms. It features a rich maritime history, beautiful ocean views, a plethora of waterfront and beach activities and entertainments, as well as a slow paced beachy lifestyle. Folly Beach is a well-loved vacation destination that draws visitors from far and wide. This means much of its population is seasonal and that in the off-season it is a much quieter community. It is a somewhat diverse community in terms of ethnicity and race. Common ancestries among residents include, English, German, Scottish and Italian. English is the primary language among residents, though some also speak Italian and Spanish.

The community was officially incorporated as a town in 1938 and then as a city in 1957. Today, the community spans approximately nineteen square miles, 12.5 square miles of land area and 6.4 square miles of water. It is a wealthy community in comparison to both state and national economic standards. It has a mixed workforce and more artists, designers and media workers in comparison to community size, than more than 90% of U.S. communities. Nearly 11% of the workforce works from home, primarily through telecommuting, freelance work and home-based businesses. Over 63% of all adults in Folly Beach have four-year degrees or more, this is nearly three times the national education average for U.S. communities. Public education for the youth of the community is provided by the schools of the Charleston County School District. The 2016 population of Folly Beach was 2,782, the estimated median household income was $95,723 and the estimated per capita income was $53,122. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in the community was $600,294, the mean price on all housing units was $384,845 and the median gross rent was approximately $1,114. The current approximate median home price in Folly Beach is $499,950.

Folly Beach features several sites on the National Register of Historic Places, like Secessionville Historic District and the Folly North Site (38CH1213), which is an archaeological site with the remains of two artillery batteries which belonged to the Union Army in the mid-1800s. It is also home to unique landmarks like Folly Pier and the Morris Island Lighthouse. County Parks/beloved local spots include Folly Beach County Park and Folly Beach Fishing Pier.
