John’s Island

Johns Island, also known as John’s Island is the name of both an island and a town located on the island. Both the community and the island are located in Charleston County, South Carolina. Johns Island is the largest island in the state and the fourth largest island on the coast of the U.S. The community has a single neighborhood, and it is the 93rd largest community in the state. It is a cozy and quiet neighborhood featuring peaceful streets and low crime rates. It is extremely ethnically diverse; the majority of residents identify as Caucasian and the next largest group identifies as African-American. Common ancestries among the residents of the community includes Irish, Scottish, English and French ancestries. Public education for the children of Johns Island is provided by the schools of the Charleston County School District.

Over 38.5% of all adults on Johns Island have four-year degrees or higher, this is well above the national education average for United States communities. It is a wealthy community compared to both state and national economic standards. It has a decidedly white-collar workforce, over 88% of the workforce hold or work white-collar positions or professions. In 2016, the population was 24,000, the estimated median household income was $61,437 and the estimated per capita income was $41,493. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $279,925 and the mean price on all housing units was $384,845. The current approximate median home price is $272,000.

Commuting is necessary for many residents of the community and many residents use the public bus service for their daily commuting needs. Johns Island is home to the Charleston Executive Airport, the beloved landmark of the Angel Oak and a beautiful equestrian center. The Angel Oak is an ancient oak tree estimated to be as much as 1500 years old. It’s trunk is more than 25 feet around and it stands approximately 65 feet tall. The Mullet Equestrian Center spans 738 acres and has 20 miles of trails. The center hosts many competitions, shows and events throughout the year. The island and its surround waters are home to abundant wildlife, like deer, alligators, otters, bobcats, dolphin’s oysters, bald eagles, egrets, osprey and more. Johns Island Presbyterian Church was first constructed in 1719. It is one of the oldest wood framed Churches in the U.S. and it appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
