Sullivan’s Island is a small island and town surrounded by the ocean waters, it is considered part of Charleston County, South Carolina. It is part of the Charleston Metropolitan area and an affluent suburb of the city of Charleston. It has a single neighborhood and is the 157th largest community in the state. The island was settled in the 17th century and the community was named for Captain Florence O’Sullivan. During the Revolutionary War, the island was the site of a Major Battle at Fort Sullivan, which is now known as Fort Moultrie. Today many historic sites in the community are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These sites include the Atlanticville Historic District, Battery Gadsen, Battery Thomson, Fort Moultrie Historic District, U.S. Coast Guard Historic District, Dr. John B Patrick House and others. The community spans 3.4 square miles and is a wealthy community in comparison to both state and federal economic standards. It is a white-collar community, where nearly 95% of the workforce is white-collar. Over 12% of the workforce works from home via telecommuting, freelance work and home-based businesses. In2016, estimated median household income was $122,294 and the estimated per capita income was $84,488. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was over $100,000, the mean price on all housing units was 384,845 and the median gross rental price was $2,191.
It is a warm and peaceful community and home to Sullivan’s Island Beach at the mouth of Charleston Harbor.
